RAMS against the job, not against a folder.
Most RAMS are a Word document from three years ago with the site name swapped. A RAMS raised against the actual job carries the client, the property, the schedule date and the source inspection or survey on its face — which is what makes it worth reading when somebody on site is deciding whether to start.
Section 01How to do it
-
01
Raise it from the job, not from scratch
Starting from the job is what puts the client, the property and the source reference on the document without anybody typing them.
-
02
Start from the shipped template
The template is a sensible baseline for the trade, not a legal opinion. It exists so you are editing something rather than staring at a blank page.
-
03
Cut what does not apply
A RAMS that lists hot works for a job with no hot works trains everybody to skim it. Removing the irrelevant is what makes the relevant land.
-
04
Add what is specific to this site
Occupied communal areas, a single stair core, a resident group, an access constraint — the site-specific lines are the ones that earn the document its place.
-
05
Approve it and brief it
Sign it off, then actually brief it at induction. An unbriefed RAMS is a filing exercise.
Section 02What the app actually does here
- A RAMS is raised against a job and prints the client, the property, the schedule date and the source inspection or survey on it
- Fire doors and fire stopping have separate templates — the fire stopping one ships eight hazard categories: COSHH, dust and fume, hot works, work at height, confined and restricted spaces, manual handling, fire-strategy impairment, and asbestos and existing materials
- The two modules keep their own spellings, RAMS and RAMs, because that is what each trade writes
- Hazards are grouped into categories, each with its own list of items, and every hazard carries who is at risk and a residual rating
- Method statements are ordered steps, not prose, so somebody can follow them on site
- The disclaimer at the foot is yours — it is one of the thirteen documents whose wording you set in Settings
- There is an approval block with a name, a role and a date, and it can carry a signature
- On the Usage plan a RAMS PDF is a commercial document, so it carries the per-document rate; on the Seat plan nothing is metered
Section 03What goes wrong
Every one of these has cost somebody real time. They are cheap to avoid and expensive to unwind.
This is the single most common failure, and it is visible the moment somebody reads the method statement against the building they are standing in.
They are genuinely different jobs with different hazards. There is a separate fire stopping template for exactly this reason.
The disclaimer is editable because it should say what your business stands behind, not what a software vendor drafted.
It is a plan for the work. Competence is a separate question, and the document does not answer it.
